CHAPTER 23

The stake-out was a fun affair, insofar as a stake-out can ever be fun, of course. But Father Reilly had brought cupcakes, Wilbur had brought actual apple pie, Scarlett had made cheese sandwiches, and Gran hadn’t forgotten about the cat contingent and had brought some delicious kibble for Dooley and me.

We were all in Gran’s car, which was perhaps a little small for such a large company, but then the point of a stake-out is not to stick out, which we certainly didn’t in Gran’s little red Peugeot.

She had parked the car across the street from the Trappers, so we could keep a close eye on that mailbox. We’d already seen Ted sneak out of the house at some point, look left and right, then deposit a bulky envelope into his mailbox, before retreating as quickly as he’d arrived. Clearly the money had been supplied by their banker, as promised.

“Such a pity,” said Father Reilly as he munched on one of Scarlett’s cheese sandwiches. “All of their savings. Gone. And all because of some very bad people. What is the world coming to, I ask you.”

“It’s coming to nothing good,” Gran said.

Father Reilly shook his head. “I still think we should have told Alec, Vesta. He should be here to arrest these people.”

“And I keep telling you that the Trappers don’t want to involve the police,” Gran returned.

“I think they’re absolutely right,” said Wilbur. Kingman’s human looked particularly snazzy tonight, I thought. He had combed his hair, had shaved the white fluff he liked to call a beard, and was smelling of roses. Well, maybe not roses, but at least he smelled nice, which is very important when you’re cooped up together in a metal box for hours on end. “They clearly don’t trust the police, and neither should we.”

Who smelled even nicer was Scarlett, of course, though Gran’s friend had overdone things to some extent. She was dressed to impress, with a low-cut dress that didn’t leave a lot to the imagination, plenty of make-up, and so much perfume that Gran had to open a window, otherwise we would have suffocated.

“My son is police, Wilbur,” Gran reminded the owner of the General Store. “And so is Odelia’s husband.”

“Well, there are always exceptions, of course,” Wilbur allowed. “But in general I think it’s wise not to put too much faith in the police.”

“They came into the store last week,” Father Reilly explained. “And confiscated Wilbur’s entire stock of alcohol. Isn’t that right, Wilbur? Turns out he had forgotten to renew his liquor license.”

“I had not forgotten to renew my liquor license!” Wilbur grunted.

“Those cops?” said Father Reilly with a smile. “They weren’t actually cops. They were crooks dressed up as cops. Robbed all of Wilbur’s liquor and he didn’t even bat an eye.”

“Oh, no,” said Scarlett. “But Wilbur, that’s terrible!”

“I knew they weren’t real cops, of course,” said Wilbur. “But I decided to trap them, didn’t I? Catch them in the act. And I did.”

“You didn’t know they were crooks,” said Father Reilly.
